Ever since 2001, June 1st has been established as World Milk Day. According to World Milk Day,
World Milk Day is a day established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to recognize the importance of milk as a global food. It has been observed on June 1 each year since 2001. The day is intended to provide an opportunity to bring attention to activities that are connected with the dairy sector.
My relationship with milk has its ups and downs.
Throughout my entire childhood, I loved milk. From having it with my morning cereal to having a glass each night with dinner. I especially loved it, if it also had some Nesquik chocolate powder in it! (I always made sure I had a spoon or straw with me so I could get every last drop).
As I got older, my body seemed to react differently to it. I wouldn’t go as far as saying I was absolutely lactose intolerant, but I was definitely sensitive to it. This led me to try almond milk and soy milk. I discovered that I liked them more than I liked dairy milk, so I stopped buying dairy milk for myself completely.
This changed, once again, when I was pregnant with my Son. It was as though everything I had once been sensitive to disappeared. I was even able to eat ice cream again! It was almost as though my Son not only took all of the nutrients from it but also removed whatever had once made it nearly impossible for me to drink. After he was born, my troubles with drinking dairy milk once again surfaced. Apparently, this isn’t rare. Many women seem to notice these changes during pregnancy.
My point is- my relationship with dairy milk has been complicated, to say the least. Therefore, celebrating World Milk Day is a bit different for me. While I appreciate how hard dairy farmers work, I also continue to replace dairy milk with alternatives whenever possible. I didn’t know how I could support dairy farmers, while also wanting to support milk alternatives. This article explains that it doesn’t have to be a competition!
Alternatives such as:
Coconut Milk– I use this ALL the time for cooking. It’s amazing.
What am I missing? Let me know in the comments what YOU use as a replacement!
I will be making a few new recipes this week. Some of them will feature almond milk in honor of World Milk Day (it’s the best I can do without using actual milk). Stay tuned!
