Originally by The Nutrition Adventure, this healthy tuna wraps recipe was my way of adding healthier ingredients into my meals. I love eating salmon but I only ever get it when it’s on sale. I wanted to have another healthy fish option that won’t cost me an arm and a leg even at regular price.
Tuna is a low-fat protein choice with about 2 grams of fat per 2.5-ounce portion of solid white albacore tuna. More importantly, the majority of fat in tuna is healthy unsaturated fats, like omega 3 fatty acids. Some fat is important to help absorb vitamins and minerals from the meal you’re eating.
Bumble Bee
I’ll admit, it’s rare for me to make a point of having tuna. As a kid, I used to have tuna sandwiches quite often. As an adult, however, I think I’ve had tuna less than five times. Hence, why these tasty and healthy tuna wraps came to be. While my partner ensures that we always have Sriracha in the house, it isn’t my particular favorite. If you would like to replace this with another hot sauce such as one of Maritime Madness’ delicious sauces, then do so!
I am also the sole fan of avocado in our household, so this can be omitted if need be. Carrots, bell peppers and green onions would also taste amazing on top (I’ve been eating so many salads that I had run out, but mark my words, they’ll be included next time).
Tuna Wraps
Ingredients
10 oz Tuna (canned in water), drained well
1/2 – 1 Ripe Avocado
1/4 tsp Dijon Mustard
Romaine or Bibb Lettuce (Any type that can easily become a holder for the tuna mixture)
Black Pepper
Finely diced carrots
Diced cucumber
Optional:
3/4 tsp Sriracha
1 Tbsp Cilantro leaves, chopped
Green Onions, diced
Bell Peppers, diced
Instructions
In a bowl, combine the drained tuna, avocado, cilantro, sriracha, mustard, and black pepper. Mix well until no more chunks of avocado remain.
Wash and pat dry 6 Bibb lettuce leaves.
Evenly divide the tuna among each lettuce leaf and top with carrots, and cucumber. Add more sriracha if desired. I don’t particularly enjoy sriracha, but my partner does, so if you’re serving this to numerous guests, be mindful! Keep separate trays of ones with sriracha and ones without. Or, keep the sriracha on the side for your guests to self-serve.
If you can serve it buffet-style, amazing! If not, they can be prepared in advance and kept in the fridge in an air-tight container for up to 24 hours.
