This past Spring, I felt quite a difference in my apartment compared to other years. I’m not sure why this year is different, but it is very clear to me (and my dry nose), that there is a change in the environment. This is why I began to look into room humidifiers.
I ended up learning more than I expected, while also finding a humidifier that I love. The following article will discuss a few of the benefits of having a cool mist humidifier. I’ll also tell you a bit about the cool mist humidifier that I not only purchased but also recommend.
Benefits of Having a Cool Mist Humidifier
As a kid, I thought that adding hot steam to the air would act as a “mini” sauna (seeing as I’m Finnish, I highly approved). As a teen, I would put hot water in a sink, and place a towel over my head to make a dome of steam to act as a facial. I would do this whenever I was feeling sick, too. I knew that anything keeping me congested would be loosened. Thanks to a bit of steam, I had an easier time breathing and my cold would be gone quickly. This is why I believed having an air humidifier may be useful. Further research states:
“Warm-mist and cool-mist humidifiers are equally effective in humidifying the air. By the time the water vapor reaches your child’s lower airways, it’s the same temperature regardless of whether it started out warm or cool.”
Mayo Clinic
This makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it? I never had a reason to think about it as an adult. To be honest, humidifiers weren’t at the top of my list of priorities. Lately, however, I’ve started to appreciate the space in which I spend my time. I doubt I’m alone in this, seeing how COVID-19 has changed all of our lives.
I’ve begun to do more DIY projects and organizing. Ever since I was a kid helping my Aunt organize her work office, I’ve had a love of cleaning. Now that I’m an adult, I’ve also started to be mindful of what I bring into my space to begin with. I’m far from being Marie Kondo, but being consciously organized is never a bad thing. The addition of a humidifier to our living space was just another part of this.
Health and Safety of a Cool Mist Humidifier
While I love the feeling of being warm and cozy, the idea of a cool mist makes me feel refreshed, and clear. As a parent, my brain automatically goes to what is safest to have around children. It makes me feel better to know that there is no chance of having any incidents involving hot water. This brings me to my next point.
Cool Mist Humidifier Safety
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the use of a cool-mist humidifier (PDF) for babies and children. Because these models send a cool mist into the air, they’re safer for children and pets than warm-mist humidifiers, aka vaporizers.
Consumer Reports
Therefore, not only is it safer for my Son, but it’s also safe for my cat, Pippit.
I love her, but Pippit is a true “scaredy-cat”. She usually stays away from such things, so I knew I didn’t have to worry too much. Of course, as I set up our Everlasting Comfort Cool Mist Humidifier, her curiosity took over… for about two seconds.
I’m happy she was introduced to it safely, and that I witnessed her reaction to it. I doubt she will care enough to investigate it a second time. In any case, my mind is at ease that she is safe while being around it, even without supervision.
The Everlasting Comfort Cool Mist Humidifier
The Everlasting Comfort Cool Mist Humidifier is exactly what my home was looking for. Not only is it extremely quiet, but it’s also compact. This leads to its first pro- it doesn’t take up a lot of space.
Perfect Size
If you’ve had experience with other humidifiers, you may be expecting this one to look more like a window air conditioner. Okay, well maybe not that big, but you get the point. Weighing all of 2.2 lbs, it’s clear that this humidifier is much smaller than most humidifiers you can find on the market.
Too big a unit could produce too much moisture, which can make a room feel stuffy. It also can promote the proliferation of dust mites and mold, triggering allergic reactions, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America says.
Consumer Reports
The Everlasting Cool Mist Humidifier has a 4 Liter (just a bit over 1 gallon) tank, and it doesn’t take up a lot of room. This is great. Especially for anyone who, like myself, lives in an apartment. While I love our apartment for being as spacious and open as it is, I also do not like clutter. The fact that I can quickly and easily put this humidifier in numerous spots around my home is amazing. I didn’t need to rearrange everything I already own in order to have space for it.
Plus, since it is so small, if I ever wish to change where I keep it, I can do so easily.
I dislike having to wait for help to do most things. Most of the time, I’m too independent to wait. It makes me extremely happy to know that I won’t be adding something so trivial as “move humidifier” to someone else’s to-do list.
In fact, I moved the appliance three times while I was deciding on its final placement. It took 3 seconds to unplug it and set it up in these spots. As you can see by the photo, two things I’ve discussed are proven.
- It truly is safe for cats.
- It is lightweight and easy to use, even when it is full of water. You’ll have to take my word for it, but I promise- I didn’t leave it in its first spot. It took me two seconds to move it, and I did so without aid. By the time I post this, it may be in a new location. My point is, that I love how lightweight, and how simple it is.
Long-Running
The 4 liters of water it holds provides several hours of use. 40 hours to be more specific. Being able to last for that long, on such a small tank is definitely one of its selling points. No one wants to be refilling a tank several times a day. Usually, this means needing to sacrifice space in order to make room for a bigger tank. Not with this humidifier! Infrequent refills + space-efficient size= a very happy Joanna.
Plus, it has an auto shut-off feature that turns it off when there is no water remaining. A long-running machine that knows when it’s meant to be turned off- the manufacturers couldn’t make it any easier to use.
It’s filterless!
Another advantage of this machine is that it is filterless. In all honesty, this made me feel a bit hesitant at first. Don’t get me wrong; I love the fact that it saves me money on having to buy filters. It simply caused me to be wary at the beginning. The sole reason is that I’ve grown accustomed to having a filter included in similar items. Especially, if it is water and/or air-related.
While there isn’t a filter, it is advised to keep the humidity between 40 to 60 percent to avoid water accumulation. Always read your product manual for proper care and further instructions.
Shhh… Can You Hear It?
You can barely hear this humidifier when it is in use. Many companies say that their products are “silent”. It’s rare for this to be the reality. While this Everlasting Comfort Ultrasonic Humidifier does make a tiny bit of noise, it’s barely noticeable.
When you do hear its faint “trickle”, it reminds you of what it’s like to be at a spa. I’m not even kidding when I say that this could also be used as a calming sleep aid machine.
It did take me just a bit of time to adjust to the sound. It’s not loud, and it’s not bothersome. But, when you’re not used to hearing a constant slight sound, it may catch you off guard a few times. No, you didn’t leave the water running and no, a pipe isn’t leaking; it’s just the humidifier.
Diffuser and Essential Oil Tray
I love scents. From bath salts and body wash to detergent and candles- as long as the scent isn’t so strong that it gives me a headache, I’m all for it. I tend to stay away from scents since I know many people who are sensitive to them. I would hate to host a get-together, just for visitors to feel overwhelmed by the smell of too many aromatic scents.
This doesn’t mean that I don’t use candles and other air fresheners whenever visitors aren’t here! Even as I type this, I have a large candle lit. I love that this humidifier comes with its own essential oil tray. It circulates the fragrant oils of your choosing into the cool mist, and it’s not overwhelming. You decide how many drops of essential oil you put in, and you’re left with a lovely fresh-smelling aroma. I love, love, love it.
Overall
I am very happy with this purchase. While I cannot offer any comments about long-term use (yet), I’ve had a wonderful experience with it so far. I’ll keep you updated in the future if/when it is relevant to discuss, but so far, so good! I love it.
