Review
Each time I saw a preview for this film, it made me laugh. I love Jason Segel and I can sometimes enjoy Cameron Diaz as an actress. While the storyline did not seem to have much substance- sometimes you just need one of those types of movies.
Diaz and Segel were funny yet also a bit disappointing.
While I do not wish to spoil anything for moviegoers, it doesn’t even feel like what I am about to say will actually spoil the movie. If you want to see this movie, just watch the preview. The majority of the funny scenes were given away in the previews and the parts that were not included in the trailers were just.. predictable (not that I expected otherwise). Rob Corddry was probably my favorite part of the movie. I really enjoyed his character and his performance but that’s nothing new.
“I didn’t want the audience to look at a poster of the movie and think, ‘I think they’re not having sex because he’s a fat ass!'”- Jason Segel
It surprised me to see how awful Jason looked. Yes, he lost weight. If it was done in a healthy manner- good for him. However, he honestly looked a bit sickly to me. I couldn’t believe it. I miss the “I Love You, Man” Jason. In an article (found here), Segel states that he was embarrassed to be naked in so many scenes. He lost weight so it would be believable that he was married to the “sex pot” Diaz. While it is understandable, it also says a whole sad lot about our society. Diaz is attractive but it’s still sad he felt the need to change so drastically.
Overall
The movie deserves the 4.9/10 rating it has on IMDb in my opinion. I wish I had enjoyed it more but while I did laugh a few times, it just felt like I could have watched the preview 100 times. It would have been the same thing. Perhaps I should mention that during the film, the theatre was full of people who did laugh out loud to the point where I heard them 12 rows away. Maybe I am being a bit too harsh but it may also be just a generation gap… I really don’t know. On the other hand, the couple I sat next to, as they were leaving said “I knew it was going to be sh*t…” so there you have it, folks.
