Preparing for the arrival of a baby is such an exciting time! Getting a crib, decorating the nursery, washing new clothes- there are several things to organize. This doesn’t mean it has to be an intimidating task! Making a list of everything that you would like to get done (so you can tackle one thing at a time) is extremely helpful.
Do you still need to paint the nursery? What about putting the crib together? Invite friends and/or family over to help! Not only will you be productive, but you will share memories that will last a lifetime. You’ll always look back at the memories fondly, and you will be able to tell your child all about these moments when they’re older.
The following are a few nursery items that are purely my recommendations from my experience with a newborn. From the “must-haves” and alternative options, to a few items that are more fun and decorative.
The Crib (Turns Into a Toddler Bed)
It’s a well-known fact that newborns sleep a lot. According to Raising Children, out of the 24 hours in a day, newborns sleep for 14-17 of them. This is vital for their health and development. While how, and where, babies sleep may differ from family to family, having a crib to safely place your baby in, can offer peace of mind.
I co-slept with my Son for quite some time. It is the only way he fell asleep peacefully. Co-sleeping is not for everyone, and it’s extremely important to follow safety precautions. Even though we co-slept, he still had a crib that we would use now and then, until he was ready to use it full-time. I love the crib we had because it transitions from a crib, to a toddler bed. Thank goodness for IKEA!
We also had a bassinette that was perfect for having him next to me in the same room. It’s the perfect combination of having nearby, while also allowing us to have our own space.
There are many new options on the market that are wonderful if you have the means to get them. For example, a bedside bassinette– this would have been a game changer! Yes, the one we had was great. However, having one that is made specifically for bedside use? Amazing!
The Nursery Changing Table (Turns Into Child’s Desk/Bookshelf)
I’ll be honest- I am perfectly fine with just putting down a changing mat. I was never planning to get a changing table. However, we were offered one as a baby gift so I did my research before purchasing one.
The first few days, weeks, months, years, of your child’s life seem to pass by in a flash. It many not seem like it as you live through it at the beginning, so you’ll need to simply trust me. Before you know it, you’ll be potty training your child. This is why, I always look for items that can grow with a baby/toddler/child/teen. Looking for a changing table that could be multifunctional was no different.

We ended up getting this changing table with shelving that turns into a desk and book shelf. I absolutely love this item. In fact, I’m looking over at it now as I type- 6 years after my Son was born. While it is amazing for storing diapers, creams, and nursing blankets, it now acts as his desk and one of his book shelves.
Baby Bouncer or Swing
There will be times, when a crib, stroller, and even play mat just won’t do. You want to expose your child to new surroundings (safely, of course). Depending on their age, a baby bouncer or swing is a great addition to your baby items. How do you decide which one to get? Nursery Book Shelves (Can Be Used for More Than Books!)
While we were able to eventually change our child’s changing table into a desk, we had used a separate night table for his baby books when he was a newborn. There wasn’t anything special about it, and if it had been placed in his nursery, it would have stuck out like a sore thumb. Would I do this again if I were to have more children? No.
Instead, I would get something that would fit his nursery better; something special and just for him. For example, this bunny shelf. Not only is it adorable, but it can be used for many things. It doesn’t have to be used solely for books. Picture frames, baby monitor, white noise machine, easy access to diaper ointment, a shelf for special stuffed animals… you get the idea. Whether you mount it on the wall, or keep it for your baby’s night table, reading area, or desk- it’ll fit into their special space perfectly.
What I like most about this, is that it doesn’t take up more floor space.
You’ll probably eventually notice that your floors are full of baby and children’s toys. These shelves help to keep things more organized, and just look at it! How cute is this bunny? Psst… it’s currently on sale!

These are just a few of the items I recommend having in your nursery. Some other suggestions are a soft play mat, black out curtains, and as I mentioned earlier, a white noise machine. I’m being serious when I say that just hearing a white noise machine now transports me back to early motherhood. I definitely recommend them for adults to use!
