A few months ago, I started to read and hear about Brit and Chips everywhere. Social media outlets and reviews were all raving about this restaurant. Being the foodie I am, I knew I had to try it but never got around to it.
A few days ago, my Mom posted a photo of the dish Brit and Chips had made for Poutine Week and it had me drooling. I knew I had to try it ASAP. Since the CDN location (5536 Côte-des-Neiges) is right near the hospital, we kept driving by it and we finally had a meal there tonight.*
*2023 Update: It seems this location has closed. They are now currently at 433 Rue McGill.
For over a hundred years Fish n’ Chips has been the staple dish of the British people, an integral part of their identity. The fish-and-chip shop, “CHIPPY” or “CHIPPER” in modern British slang originated in the United Kingdom in 1860.
Brit & Chips goal is to capture the best aspects of a traditional chippy and add some of the local flavour and style that Montreal is known for. The menu was created by a team of Montreal’s pre-eminent experts in English Cuisine and Aesthetic, after tireless treks through England, hunting down different recipes and ideas from the most renowned English Fish n’ Chips shops. via Brit & Chips
We entered the restaurant and it is a really cozy spot- very clean, white, and has a very casual and welcoming vibe to it. Since it was 23 degrees today in Montreal, we decided to sit outside and enjoy the weather. Their terrasse is quite small due to their location but it is still a very nice area.
The person I went with had the Sour Cream & Onion Battered Sole with Chips ($12.50) and since I am pregnant and did not wish to have any beer-battered fish, I decided to try their Large Scampi Salad ($13). I know they have alcohol-free options, such as their famous Maple Syrup Battered Haddock, but I wanted to be on the bit healthier side, so I got the salad instead.
I honestly ended up eating a bunch of the fries off of the other plate- they taste so good. If I could have stolen the fish, I would have done that too. I took most of my salad home with me. I am not saying it is bad, but it wasn’t what I was in the mood for, I suppose.
Overall, I don’t think I would order the salad again, although it is light and refreshing which is great for the Summer months. I would definitely order some of the Fish and Chips next time we go because they taste AMAZING. It’s clear to see why this place is so well known for having Montreal’s Best Fish and Chips. I can’t wait to try their other battered options once I am able to and we will definitely be going back!
