I hope you all had a wonderful Halloween! Did you (ahem, your kids) get a lot of candy this year? What was trick-or-treating like in your area?
If you have some extra candy that survived the first few days of November, this Monster Chocolate Bark is the perfect treat to make. All you need is chocolate chips and your favorite candy and chocolate bars. I have seen numerous recipes online for this lately, but we used the one from Just a Taste (Original Recipe by Kelly Senye).
*You do need to melt some chocolate, so adult supervision is advised. Be careful!*
Monster Chocolate Bark
Ingredients
3 Cups Chocolate Chips- Bittersweet White, or Dark
An assortment of whichever Candy and Mini Chocolate Bars you prefer
*We used mini: Kit-Kats, Aero Bars, Coffee Crisps, Reese Cups, Smarties, Nerds, edible Eyes (which are ridiculously cute), and sprinkles.
Instructions
Line a baking sheet with wax paper.
If you’re preparing to make it with young children, place the candies in their own separate bowls so it’s easier for them to reach. It is also a great way for them to taste the candy before they put it on their bark.
Melt the chocolate chips by placing them in a glass bowl over boiling water. When I made it with my niece and nephew they were 4 and 2 years old. While they were very capable at baking and cooking- I would only let them be in charge of this step once they were much older.
Stir well to make sure that it is all evenly melted.
Another option is to melt the chocolate in the microwave. This is what I had done as a child and it made this step much easier. As long as you wear oven gloves to protect your hands, and are careful, this may help the child be more involved but it does depend on the age.
While the adult prepares the chocolate, have the kids cut/break their mini chocolate bars. We used plastic knives, which did work well. However, keep in mind that some bars are harder to get through. The pieces need to be quite small, so if the kids need help, cut the pieces a bit smaller for them. (With their permission, of course!)
Pour the melted chocolate onto wax paper and spread it so there is a thin to medium-thick layer. You can use a spatula, a spoon, or whatever you find easiest. This is fun for the kids to do- just be careful. When the chocolate is first put on the baking sheet, it is quite hot.
Sprinkle all of the candy on top of the chocolate spread and put it in the fridge. Let it sit until you can see that it has hardened, about 40-60 minutes. We had gone out for a walk and by the time we got back, it was ready to eat!
Breaking it seemed to be quite difficult for the kiddos to do. While we didn’t break the chocolate into a bark the first time, it almost made it even more fun to see them just chomp into the huge candy bar the way it was.
The kids absolutely really loved it!
I need to give my Sister, niece, and nephew a HUGE thank you for being involved in this (I also got their permission before posting this). It was a ton of fun and a great way to celebrate the days leading up to Halloween.
Looks like huge fun, pretty sure my 7 year old will enjoy this just as much as your niece and nephew!
