During the chilly Winter months, all I want to do is hibernate. I love curling up in a big blanket to get warm and cozy! As I was reading some of the Mommy sites I am subscribed to, I noticed that one of my favorite ladies has a shop full of Mexican Falsa Blankets. Which, is something I had yet to own but have always been curious about. Not only are they beautiful, but the prices she offers are amazing!
Sarah-Beth from Growing A Little Love (now Meadow Living) not only provided me with a ton of information about the blankets and sent me my own to try. She is also being kind enough to offer my readers 15% off of these beautiful blankets. (More information can be found below; valid until July 2017).
“I [Sarah-Beth] had been dying to find a blanket that was durable, beautiful, and good for pretty much everything. My Mom and Dad had a blanket like this years and years ago. I have so many fond childhood memories of it. I couldn’t find one in Canada, so I decided to find a way to bring them here myself.”
On the website, I noticed that it says the blankets are made from vegan materials. I wanted to know a bit more about what that means and how they are made.
She explained to me that this is one of the core values of her business that she finds very important. She wanted to ensure that the supplier provided blankets that were vegan, environmentally friendly, and ethically made. This was not a small or fast goal to achieve. Several e-mails had to be sent and she spent a great amount of time researching to make sure that those values were met. All the while providing products of good quality and reasonable affordability.
“After many months of investigating suppliers, I finally found a company that guarantees my values would be met. The blankets are made of 100% vegan materials, a blend of cotton, polyester, and acrylic materials from recycled clothing. They are woven by hand in Mexico by women from their homes – ensuring that these women can make an income while at home raising their families. […] Since the blankets are woven using recycled fabrics, they greatly decrease environmental impact by using the tactics we all learned in school. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!”
When I first saw the blankets, I was imagining all of the great uses I had for one. I wanted to know what she used them for, just in case it gave me even more ideas.
“I use my blankets for everything! Picnics, yoga, snuggling up with my baby twins; it makes a great backdrop for photos as well! I have had customers purchase a blanket to use as a tapestry, yoga, beach blanket, or curtains. or just to hang over their couch for a beautiful pop of color in their homes! There is actually one designated to my car, so that we always have it when we’re out adventuring!”
I had been thinking of using them for picnics once the beautiful Summer returns. When she mentioned it herself, I just wanted to confirm that I wouldn’t ruin the blanket by using it outside. “One of my favourite things about these blankets is that they’re incredibly durable so you don’t have to worry about getting it dirty while taking it out on hikes, picnics, or camping! It’s the perfect blanket for outside!”
Therefore, I asked if there were any special care instructions but they are (thankfully), very low maintenance. You simply throw them in the washing machine and dryer. I am told that the blankets get softer with every wash. I do recommend throwing them in the wash once before the first use, just like you would any other product.
One of the first things I noticed when browsing her online shop, is how low the prices are.
When perusing the internet, you’ll see that these blankets usually go for around $60-$70, and they aren’t even authentic. Growing A Little Love is selling them for $35-$40!!! I couldn’t believe it. You also do not need to worry that the low price is only possible at the expense of the quality. When asked about how the low prices are possible, Sarah-Beth replied, “Being the sole owner of my business, and working it from home, we have pretty much zero overhead cost. There isn’t a middleman, so we get our blankets from the supplier and ship them from my home straight to you! That’s how we can keep costs so low while continuing to offer top quality!”
There are 15 colors available and there should be a couple of new colors coming very soon.
I have the Cobalt Falsa blanket since Blue is my favorite color and I love it. Growing A Little Love is based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba. If you live in the vicinity, you will hopefully be able to buy the blankets from local stores later this year. I will keep you up to date on which stores will be carrying them when the time comes. For now- luckily for us- they can be shipped to anywhere in the US and Canada.
You already know how much I love businesses that give back to their community. This is another reason why I appreciate the kindheartedness that is at the center of this brand. Last year, when the wildfires swept through Fort McMurray, Growing A Little Love donated part of the proceeds of blanket sales to the Red Cross to help relief efforts. “I would love to partner with other charities! Giving back is something I really value and I’m hoping to do more like that in the future.”
I am always inspired by parents who work hard to make sure that their family is taken care of.
As she mentioned above, Sarah-Beth is a Mom to twins. I was in awe and I had to find out how she could handle such a heavy work and family load.
“We live and breathe on a schedule, if we didn’t I think I would lose my mind! Having twins is so much fun and I wouldn’t change it for the world. It’s nice to have something “non-baby” related to focus on sometimes! The shop is truly a labor of love for me and that’s what keeps me in balance. I love the Mom life and the work life. Having the shop is just a perfect fit for my life right now. And also yoga, to keep my head screwed on straight. The only really intense struggle I have found is the no-sleep struggle, as I’m sure all Mommas know very well. What I would do for a solid 6-hour sleep!”
My own Son, Liam and I really enjoy our blanket, (as does our cat apparently).
From it being a decorative piece ouch, to being a cozy blanket for us to cuddle/play on, it will be used for years to come. Even receiving the blanket was fun! When you open your package, you find the blanket wrapped in string with a thank you tag from the company. Such small touches mean so much!
If you would like to purchase your own, (they would also make AMAZING gifts!) simply head over to www.growingalittlelove.com/shop. Use the code JOANNA15 to get 15% off of your purchase! Thank you to Sarah-Beth again, for such a kind gesture.
Thank you to Sarah-Beth for giving me such great insight into the great company that is Growing A Little Love!
