Trying to pack everything up and move to a new place is one of the most stressful experiences that people go through. Moving creates a lot of chaos, and one of the worst feelings is discovering that you broke something in the process.
Some of the most fragile items are glasses, plates, bowls, and other essential kitchen items. Knowing how to protect your kitchenware when moving can make the process easier and reduce some of the stress of unpacking once you settle in.
Utilize Towels and Padding
One of the most helpful pieces of advice about moving is to wrap your fragile things in protective materials. Instead of covering everything in flimsy newspaper or spending money on bubble wrap, you may want to consider wrapping fragile items in kitchen towels or dishrags.
If you don’t have a wide selection of hand towels, you can use your bath towels or clothing items such as t-shirts and socks. These cloth layers protect your fragile items and reduce their risk of breaking during your move. It’s a good idea to put something inside of each hollow object. This will act as a cushion in addition to wrapping it.
Finding Specialized Boxes
One of the most common mistakes people make while moving is tossing everything into a box without properly organizing it. You can protect your kitchenware by placing it in properly designated boxes. For example, many stores that sell packing materials offer specialized boxes to hold glasses and similar objects in specific containers. These boxes significantly reduce the risk of breaking your cups and make it easier to find your kitchenware while unpacking.
Consider Double Boxing
In extreme situations, another way to protect your kitchenware when moving is to consider a double boxing approach. Double boxing is the process in which you safely pack things into a box and then put that box into a slightly larger box. Fill the gaps between the two boxes with padding, clothes, or towels to protect the interior box. This process uses more materials which may not please those of us who are environmentally conscious. However, it’s a good option for those with very important items that they greatly want to protect.
While it often requires a little extra work, safely packing up your kitchenware can make your move go much smoother. Don’t let a few cracked glasses be the sour start to living in your new home!
