For many people, owning a grand piano is a dream come true. These incredible objects are anything but cheap. (Some can cost as much as a house!) However, living the dream isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. Sure, you love having this glorious musical instrument in your home, but it takes up a lot of space. You may find yourself having to constantly work around it and adapt your living environment to its needs.
Fortunately, this post can help. Here, we look at some ways you can organize your home if you have a grand piano. There’s no reason why this magnificent instrument can’t fit into your lifestyle!
Choose The Proper Placement
The first step is to choose the proper placement. The grand piano should be placed somewhere it will be accessible but also a little bit out of the way. You wouldn’t want it to become obstructive!
The ideal location would be in a spot that avoids direct sunlight and hot temperatures. It should also be away from thoroughfares or natural walking routes through your home. With this being said, it shouldn’t require a long detour if you simply want to play your grand piano.
Make It A Focal Point
It can help tremendously to make the grand piano a focal point, instead of the mantelpiece or coffee table. As such beautiful objects, these instruments are hard to ignore and seamlessly become the room’s main attraction.
If you desire for it to make an even bigger statement, consider hanging a mirror behind it or placing some artwork above it. Do something that draws the eye in the instrument’s direction and celebrates the craftsmanship it embodies.
Use Storage Solutions
Renting a cheap storage unit is another possibility. Sure, you could keep your grand piano in here when you’re not using it but this should be the very last resort. Instead, it makes more sense to keep your unused or unwanted possessions in such a storage space. Thus, opening up space for the piano itself.
Think about how much better your home might look if your grand piano has pride of place. Removing bulky furniture and other clutter helps it become a focal point for your rooms and interior design.
Open-Plan Area Spaces
If you have an open-plan area in your home, consider using it for your grand piano. This way, it won’t dominate the space and you might even get better acoustics.
Ironically, apartments are often the perfect venue for grand pianos, even if they offer less space overall. That’s because they tend to have a single, large interior space, instead of several smaller ones. Unfortunately, the downside is that the grand piano might displace other possessions, making it more challenging to live in harmony. This truly depends on the space available, and the person(s) inhabiting the space. Everyone has their own style and taste so it may take a bit more rearranging, but there is a solution that will appease everyone.
Add Seating
People should be able to stop, sit down, and listen to the person playing in comfort. For this reason, adding seating near the piano is highly recommended if the space allows for it. Using this added sitting space for everyday use will make the space multifunctional.
For example, if the piano is placed near a bay window, ‘bumped out’ window seats can be added. Not only is this the perfect reading nook, but it can also act as storage. Whether it’s for blankets/throws, pillows, sheet music, or books- the fact that it has more than one use is highly advantageous. A more simple seating option, is a piano bench or stools. If you will use the piano to offer or take lessons, these will come in handy for both the student and instructor.
Lastly, grand pianos need proper acoustics to sound their best. Therefore, using area rugs and curtains will dampen sound reflections and improve the room’s acoustics. Choose items that will showcase the piano while keeping your home cozy and inviting- you’ll be able to host gatherings for recitals in no time.
