Few things can lift your mood better than walking into your home and being greeted with wafting freshness. On the other hand, a musty environment can lead to higher emotional disturbances with rising ambient sensory stress. While there are tons of store-bought products you can use to freshen your home, such commercial products may contain harsh chemicals that might harm your health over time.
Plus, why spend on artificial products when there are more natural options? Here are some natural ways to keep your home interior fragrant, and your home fresh, all the time.
Remove All Sources of Bad Odors
Nothing hides a bad smell. You can invest in the best air fresheners, but as long as you fail to eliminate the odour’s source, your home won’t smell great. So, first things first— identify all the sources of bad smell in your home. Then, eliminate them. Some of the most common causes of bad smells in homes include moisture buildup in walls and carpets, mould, pet pee and dander. Other causes are sewer odours, gas, lingering smoke, old trash, decaying dead animals (trapped somewhere indoors), unattended washrooms, and unpleasant aromas from the kitchen. Sounds pleasant, doesn’t it? (Ew.)
Declutter and Clean
A disorganized and unkempt home is always challenging to keep fresh and fragrant. Therefore, it’s important to always keep your home neat and orderly. Yes, it can be a lot of work, but it’s worth it. Additionally, cleaning up regularly makes it easier to identify sources of foul smells that would otherwise be difficult to find. Also, ensure that you wash your sheets and laundry regularly, clean all upholstery, and bathe your pets.
Let In the Natural Elements
In good weather, keep your windows and doors open as often as possible to usher in the natural light and fresh breeze. Unless, of course, there’s an unnaturally high form of air pollution going on outside. Letting in the sunlight and fresh air will quickly improve your interior’s air quality, and it can also help your body feel fresh and relaxed. It’s an important tip to keep in mind! In fact, I’m going to open my windows as I continue to type, it’s that good of a tip!
While speaking of air quality, be sure to add some indoor plants to your interior space. Plants are known to remove toxins from the air while exchanging carbon dioxide for much-needed oxygen. The pleasant colours also have a pleasant effect on your mind and body!
Turn on a Dehumidifier
Moisture can get in the way of making your home smell fresh, as humid air can trap pollutants, constantly keeping your air full of odour. Turning on a dehumidifier will help pull the moisture and discourage mould growth. You can add your favourite essential oil to your dehumidifier to spread the fragrance. This will leave your home smelling amazing around the clock.
